We'll discuss the unique relationship between the public and private sectors dating back to 1972 when Medicare coverage was expanded to all individuals with ESRD right up to the Advancing American Kidney Health Executive Order of 2019. In episode five, we begin a series of 30,000-foot overviews of the major topic areas in kidney care. We're calling these "the state of" episodes, and this week we focus on transplantation. In an information-packed discussion with Dr. Anil Paramesh, surgical director at Tulane University, we cover where we've been, where we are, and where are headed. Dr. Paramesh highlights how regulatory practices shape practice, the real-world impact of removing race from the eGFR equation, and a frank discussion of America's high "non-use" or kidney "discard" rate. Ending on a hopeful note, we chat about how to improve living donation and innovations headed toward human trials.
